I would have probably taken the wrong tablets or just given up.” 31-year-old brain injury survivor Stephen bravely shares his story to demonstrate the importance of access to neurorehabilitation; and how donations this Christmas can empower brain injury survivors to rebuild their lives. This Christmas, you can ensure that more brain injury survivors can receive the same life-changing support that Stephen has by sending a special donation. His family was a military family and it was the only future he saw for himself. He was a member of the defence forces and his identity was Private Byrne. Not only was Stephen a Soldier, but he was also a father, a brother, a son. He was in his twenties and he was a fit and healthy young man. But a brain injury doesn't care how young, fit, or healthy we are. A brain injury doesn't discriminate. Stephen had a fall while on army duty and a CT scan revealed that his brain was bleeding and it was profoundly serious.

Stephen lost power in his arms and legs and began to fall when walking. He also developed incontinence and needed a tube through his stomach, connecting his bladder and a urine bag. Stephen's brain injury stole many precious moments of fatherhood from him as his daughter, Molly, was only a year old at the time. His injury also robbed his career as he was discharged from the defence forces on medical grounds. Private Byrne became Mister Byrne earlier this year. His brain injury changed the course of his life and it was a devastating blow to Stephen. Vital donations meant Acquired Brain Injury Ireland was able to support Stephen at the most challenging time of his life.

Stephen had someone and somewhere to turn to. Stephen was empowered to open up to his family, participate in groups for brain injury survivors and engage in one-to-one neurorehabilitation support.
It has been a hard road for Stephen to get to where he is today. And there were many times that he has thought about giving up. But because of vital donations, Stephen has had the support he needed to navigate this rough road.

Fifty-two people acquire a brain injury in Ireland every day. Families like Islam’s. Lawlessness and violence forced her to flee to Kassab refugee camp in North Darfur with her new born baby Rawia. After making the long journey, Islam was relieved to find safe haven. Unfortunately, this relief was shortlived.

GOAL teams immediately recognised that baby Rawia was severely malnourished. She was slipping in and out of consciousness. Clearly, fast action was needed. GOAL teams transferred baby Rawia and Islam to a local hospital, where she was placed on a special high calorie liquid diet.

We desperately hoped this would work. Islam prayed that Rawia would have the strength to fight back and grow strong. But it was too late. Tiny Rawia lost her brave battle in early September.
Sadly, Rawia’s tragic story is a familiar one in East Africa this Christmas. Every year almost 46,000 men and women across Ireland hear those words and start their own frightening, challenging and often lonely cancer journey. And for the last 24 years the Marie Keating Foundation has been there at every step of that journey for thousands of people with cancer. Someone diagnosed with cancer will face additional and unexpected costs of up to €1,000 a month, all at a time when they are forced to reduce their working hours or stop work due to their cancer diagnosis. The additional financial burden covers incurred expenses such as travel to vital treatment and increased heating bills because of their chemo. This means that many people are forced to worry about paying bills instead of focussing on getting through their treatment and recovery. This is simply wrong. But with his vision so seriously impaired, Joe could no longer undertake simple daily tasks.

One day, he suffered a serious accident, cutting his foot. A nurse who cared for him made a crucial recommendation: Try NCBI. “NCBI was absolutely pivotal,” Joe says today, “in getting me to turn a corner to acceptance of my sight loss.” Yes, it was a hard time, he recalls, “but through their professionalism, it made the daily grind a bit easier.” Today, Joe is thriving and living independently.

Through NCBI, Joe — like so many others — started life over. “I had to reboot,” he says, “and relearn how to live. I found it very hard to do,” he recalls, “but the staff knew how to teach people with sight loss to adapt their home, feel confident getting about, or be competent using technology to full effect.” Soon Joe had joined a technology club. “I made some good friends!” he says with a smile. “The reception I got was very welcoming. If you dig in and decide to take their guidance, they make life a lot easier.”

Your support today is critically important, because some 55,000 people in Ireland are blind or vision impaired, and the number is rising. We know that the festive season is all about togetherness: the warmth and comfort of familiarity and love. But for families caring for a loved one with dementia, this vision of calm and connection can feel very far away. This Christmas, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland has launched a special Day Care appeal featuring husband and wife, Tommy & Susan. Tommy met his lovely wife Susan nearly 50 years ago – in a pub quiz. Since Susan got her dementia diagnosis six years ago, Tommy has been providing full-time, 24-hour care for her. He’s so sweet and doting. But he’s also absolutely exhausted. This is not an unusual story, there are thousands of people across Ireland in a similar situation. There are currently 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland with another 30 diagnosed every day. Philanthropy is not always the easiest concept to convey an understanding of. While a direct translation of the word from its Greek origins provides a factual insight, examples of philanthropy in action serve to bring the concept to life making it very real for all engaging with it.

Philanthropy Ireland is a small not-for-profit dedicated to cultivating and supporting philanthropy, so we know that messaging with clarity and purpose is vitally important. While we are appreciative of many engaging in philanthropic giving – businesses, families, individuals – we are equally mindful that what is being achieved is not widely understood.

Our challenge was to convey in simple terms the depth and diversity of philanthropy in Ireland. In conveying messages on what is being achieved we were certain in the belief that it would serve to deepen engagement with philanthropy. SmartSimple Cloud, through its mapping tool, is supporting us in reaching this goal. SmartSimple is a pioneer in cloud-based grant management software and working with them has allowed us to achieve our philanthropic goals.

In simple terms, the mapping tool provides a visual picture of how, where, and who is being supported by philanthropic giving. Observers of the map, which will be housed on here can click on a geo pin to learn about projects and communities funded by Philanthropy Ireland members.

Why does this work so well for us? Apart from the simplicity of application and use, it provides key compelling information points on philanthropy, such as:

Place: We all identify with a place, whether it is our place of birth, where we are living, working, or other. Affinity with place runs deep and it is a powerful connector. The map enables this.

Motivation and cause: We all have our passions of interest. For whatever reason, whether through our life experiences, or those of people close to us, we develop our own motivations of interest in issues close to our hearts. The map highlights causes, their location, and the support provided.

Interest and knowledge: We are curious by nature and open to learning. If we know and understand what is happening, it may prompt further action, it may be a key influencer.

Ultimately, the map will provide a striking illustration of the transformational impact of philanthropy in Ireland as well as identifying further opportunities for philanthropic investment.

Directly or indirectly, we are all beneficiaries of philanthropy. The map generated by SmartSimple goes some way to test this claim by providing a simple workable tool to shine a light on where our members’ philanthropy is active (the service) and for whom (the beneficiaries).

For us, it is a beginning. We plan to populate this further, using the SmartSimple Cloud tool to bring inspiring stories of philanthropy to all communities and stakeholders throughout Ireland. We are very grateful to SmartSimple for this opportunity, demonstrating their own philanthropy through the provision of such support.

http://dublinchamberofcommerce.newsweaver.ie/v3files/shard1/12961/c2/fc0cd920d044aa6f4d8b16.jpg Read More
